Our mission
Helping Ocala's artists build careers in fine art
Magnolia Art Xchange is an arts incubator for emerging and mid-career artists. Through affordable studio space, exhibitions, professional development and collaboration, we give artists the resources and connections to advance their careers, and help make Ocala a city that does four things for professional fine artists:
Talent should not have to leave Ocala to be taken seriously. Gifted artists drift away from mid-sized cities toward the places where a career looks possible: somewhere affordable to work, peers to work beside, and walls that collectors actually visit. MAX puts those things here. A private studio in the historic Union Station, open around the clock and priced for a working artist, is a reason to stay, and for an artist elsewhere, a reason to come. Every resident who builds a practice in Ocala makes the case to the next one that serious work gets made here.
Skill gets an artist through the door; a career takes a plan. Over four terms a resident curates two group exhibitions and mounts two solo shows, the first a place to take risks and the second a capstone. Alongside the shows come mentorship and seminars on the side of art that school rarely teaches: pricing, writing about the work, approaching galleries, keeping collectors. The aim is not one good show but a cohesive body of work, and the professional habits to keep making and placing it long after the residency ends.
Most careers stall on practical things, not a lack of talent. Rent outpaces sales, the studio is a spare bedroom, and nobody is around to say the new series is working. MAX keeps studio fees within reach and the doors open at two in the morning when the work is going well. It surrounds residents with affiliates and alumni who trade honest critique, pass on opportunities and turn up at each other’s openings. And it takes on the promotion of a show, and the conversations with buyers when a piece sells, so more of an artist’s hours go into the work itself.
Art becomes a career when people see it, talk about it and take it home. MAX’s salons change through the year with solo shows, group exhibitions and an alumni showcase, each opening with a night that brings the city in to meet the artists. The First Saturday Gallery Tour opens the building every month, and resident work hangs on the walls of partner businesses around town, in front of people who might never have walked into a gallery. Every sale, every press mention and every visitor who remembers a name is recognition that follows the artist out of the building.

A business incubator gives a young company a desk, advice and a network until it can stand on its own. MAX does the same for artists, at a price a working artist can afford, and the public gets a front-row seat.

It starts with one artist
Ocala has a vibrant creative culture and a wealth of artistic talent. When its artists were asked what they needed, they didn't ask for applause. They asked for affordable studios, help with the business of art, places to show and sell their work, and doors that open outside office hours. MAX exists because of those answers.
An artist who can afford to stay in Ocala keeps making work here, showing it here and teaching here. Each opening brings people downtown. Each sale puts a local piece in a local home or business. Each class gives somebody else their start. Invest in one artist, and it travels outward.

The building
A 1916 railway station, full of art
MAX lives in Ocala Union Station, built in 1916 and on the National Register of Historic Places. The old waiting room is now Salon A, lined with resident studios; its tile floors, windows and woodwork are the originals.
Walk through it room by room, see where each artist works, or hold an event of your own in it — three hours among the art, from $150.
