The program
The Resident Artist Program supports the creative and professional growth of emerging
and mid-career artists in the collaborative setting of MAX. A residency is a six-month
membership, and residents may reapply for up to three more terms. Six residents work at
MAX at any one time, and applications are taken on a rolling basis as studios open up.
What a residency gives you
A private, unfurnished studio for work in any medium, with access around the clock
The wash-down sink, business center, lounge and Wi-Fi
A solo exhibition each year of the work you make here
Group exhibitions twice a year with resident and affiliate artists
The chance to curate a group exhibition each year
An artist profile and your work on the MAX website
Programs that build artistic, professional and business skills
Mentorship from MAX staff, board, advisors and alumni
A community of artists, and introductions to patrons and curators
What MAX asks of you
Steady work in your studio toward your goals and your solo exhibition — expect at least 20 hours a week
The monthly resident artist meeting
Being at exhibition receptions and major events, or letting MAX know in advance
Taking part in the group exhibitions and collaborative projects
Some volunteer time: event setup, tours, outreach
Content for MAX's website and social media, and sharing MAX with your own networks
Together these come to about ten hours a month beyond your own studio time.
Have these ready
10 to 15 images of your work (JPEG or PNG; they are resized for you)
Your résumé or CV, as a PDF or Word document
Two references, and if you have them, up to two letters of recommendation
The $35 non-refundable application fee, waived for current residents applying for another term. Pay it online before or after you apply.
How residents are chosen
Applications are reviewed anonymously by a panel of outside art professionals,
independent of MAX's board, for the strength of the portfolio, clarity of vision and
commitment to the practice. Finalists are invited to interview with the MAX Selection
Committee: board members, community partners and a representative of the City of Ocala.
